We all love a roadside cafe found nestled along the highway. There is always the hope that the place you found has the perfect pie to satisfy your sweet side. Well, now we've found it. Sweet Side Cafe is just on the outskirts of Columbia on Hwy 99, technically in Lewsiburg, but owner Laura McLendon will tell you the truth that it's really in old and almost forgotten Caney Creek.
McLendon started Sweet Side Cafe on the side of the road, literally. Daily she would set up a table and sell baked goods on the side of the highway until one day she realized business was picking up and not slowing down. She went to the owners of the building she's in now and they agreed to let her set up shop.
Sweet Side Cafe's menu looks fits the bill for any hunger pain you might have during the day. Sweet cinnamon rolls and muffins dot the counter in the morning, while hot breakfast options simmer in the back kitchen. I ordered a sausage, egg and cheese croissant as I tend to favor savory, but the breakfast options are plenty. And for anyone looking for a new place to eat on Sunday's, McLendon offers a Sunday Brunch where you can "Try a little bit of everything we have to offer," said McLendon.
Their Lunch and Dinner menu offers everything from the lighter side of salads, to classic pimento cheese, open faced sandwiches, burgers, and southern favorites like country ham and two sides. McLendon offers catering, as well as hosts in-house events like business lunches and private parties. The space is divided into two room with a front porch for those that like to set a spell.
We haven't forgotten those desserts either. Trays of cheesecakes chilled in the main cooler with a list of options to fit any sweet tooth. Cakes, pies, banana pudding, tarts, and anything that catches McLendon's fancy is offered. You can order a single serving, but some things are just better shared. Whole cakes and pies can be ordered for special occasions or just because you're feeling nice.
Sweet Side Cafe is just a skip out of town and is open most days to serve the weary traveler or local foodie. McLendon is open Tue-Fri - 5am-7pm; Sat - 6am-2pm; and Sun - 8am -2pm.
