Maury County business women took one step forward in their careers by attending the Maury Alliance “Women in Business Luncheon”. Organized by Kara Huckaby, Director of Chamber of Commerce and the new Communications & Events Manager, Bethany Orban, the luncheon gave women a chance to network with the up and coming female talent in Maury County.
To motivate and inspire attendees, the Maury Alliance invited motivational speaker, author, and consultant Jennifer Way to come and speak. Way is the founder of Way Solutions, a Nashville based a consulting firm that serves companies and individuals with specific retention and career strategies.

The topic of the day was “Women and Power- Our Love/Hate Relationship”. Through wit and personal recollections Way identified the common mistakes women make in the workplace that prohibit them from moving forward. The words “I’m Sorry” frequently creep up in female correspondence and conversation. Way gave attendees permission to strike that phrase from their dialect, “Don’t say you’re sorry. You didn’t hurt their feelings. Mistakes happen in work and you just need to own up to them and move on.”
Way encouraged the women at the luncheon to strive for growth in their careers, not by being a man, but by cultivating on the strengths they have. Way showed that men are natural problem solvers who know how to affect others in higher ranking positions and effectively delegate, qualities that can unfairly be seen as “bossy” in women. Whereas women, Way says, tap into their abilities to encourage and mentor team members to prove their strengths as a leader. By effectively learning to communicate with higher ups, and outline the ways in which a woman has executed the projects assigned to her, women can succeed in their desired career paths.
By the end of the lunch it was evident each woman stood a little straighter and walked away with a new tool in the career belt. A big Thank You goes to the Maury Alliance for bringing such an inspiring speaker. If you missed this luncheon, head over to www.mauryalliance.com to find out about the next event.
