Crisp bow ties, cheerful ties and sparkly, colorful gowns and the first hint of fall weather make for a lovely evening... and a lovely evening it was last Saturday night, September 12, at the Mt. Pleasant Benefit Ball. The ball boasted a record attendance of more than 200 people.
The event was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Collier (pictured below) at the Rattle and Snap Sportsmen Club, overlooking Eagle Lake in Mt. Pleasant. Cocktails were served at 6 p.m., with dinner and dancing following.
Mr. Collier gave tours of their lakeside cabin, which is the Colliers full-time residence. Mrs. Collier said that, although there are six other people who own land in the 1200-acre gated community, they are the only family who lives in the area year-round.
The well-appointed home features 40-feet beams made of contiguous American chestnut from the 1800s. As Mr. Collier explained, the American Chestnut tree was an important hardwood tree that was common in the Appalachian Mountain range, until it was devastated and virtually wiped out by an Asian fungus known as the chestnut. The log walls of the Collier's home are a wonderful historic representation of the strong, straight-grained and nearly symmetrical aspects that made it an ideal wood for building.
Outside the cabin's long porch, the ball's patrons could have their portraits made on the lawn in front of the picturesque lake. Before dinner they could enjoy a beverage at one of the two bars bordering the main tent, browse the many auction items or even watch the game on a big-screen TV over the bar, as many of the sports fans chose to do.
Dinner was catered by the Mt. Pleasant Grille, which served delicious ribs and chicken. Dancing followed, with music provided by the band Johnny T.
This year's sole recipient of the ball's proceeds is the Mt. Pleasant High School. The proceeds will go to aide and assist art students with an opportunity to continue their arts education at the high school level.
