It’s not often that we get to experience an evening in Paris right here in Columbia, Tennessee. This year, however, Zion Christian Academy put on a French-styled theme with its “A Night in Paris” dinner and auction fundraiser on March 20.
Guests were greeted with a bistro-style vignette in the entry way and Eiffel Tower centerpieces in the main hall. The Parisian décor was orchestrated by Zion parent and decorating chair, Christie Riggins, with help from Pastor Joey Scruggs. MC for the event was Zion headmaster Donald Walhman who boasted a Parisian artist’s beret and pencil-thin mustache. The Zion drama team rounded out the evening with a performance from their upcoming play, “Happy Days, The Musical.”
Of the 300+ people attending, many a parent and guest said “oui” to one of the auction items up for bid that ranged from beach condos and a variety of themed class baskets, to fabulously creative projects made by the elementary grade classes. Local auctioneer Eddie Ables added his fast-paced oratory skills for a lively auction process that, at times, could have been interpreted as “en François.”
One of the highest bidding items was a colorful wood palette American flag, featuring the handprints of Mrs. Walhman’s kindergarten class. To top it off, the sale price was matched by Jeffrey Chappell of the Office of International Affairs at the US Securities and Exchange Commissions. Other popular items included a Nanny for a Day, donated by Mrs. Walhman, and a Green Egg, donated by Ted’s Sporting Goods.
En tout, the evening was big success for the fundraiser, which enables the Zion PTF to improve academics, the classrooms and school grounds. Cochairs Shannon Stamatis and Mitzi Fann were able to bid au revoir to a wonderful evening.
