Forget blue suede. Red shoes, bluegrass and Americana were the themes of the Red Shoe BBQ & Bluegrass Show Saturday evening, March 28, at the Mt. Pleasant Grille, which was headlined by Grammy nominees Eric Brace and Peter Cooper.
The fundraiser for CASA of Maury County kicked off with a lively performance by local favorite, Dr. Bob Thompson’s “Annual Bluegrass Band,” which also featured local dentist Dr. David Foster on mandolin. After a delicious barbecue dinner, Kristin Parker, former attorney and current executive director of CASA, took the stage to thank everyone for their support and to describe CASA’s objective, which is to train citizens as “court-appointed special advocates” for children who have been abused or neglected and are in need of legal representation to ensure the best outcome for the child.
Ms. Parker introduced program director Marcia Boren, who has been the leader of CASA of Maury County, Inc. since the program’s inception. Because what CASA does is complex and serious, Mrs. Boren involved the evening’s patrons by assigning random attendees a role in a CASA case – from the child’s mother to multiple fathers to the child’s guardians, to a bevy of attorneys and judges. This interaction helped the audience better understand the tangled and complex web that is interwoven in each CASA case.
The evening’s headliner, “Americana” music duo Eric Brace and Peter Cooper, lightened things up with a “story-telling” performance that was both whimsical and witty. The pair travel worldwide and are well known for songs that reflect a love of harmony and their journalistic careers. Brace was a music journalist for the Washington Post. Cooper is a former professor of country music at Vanderbilt’s Blair School of Music and senior music writer for The Tennessean.
Those in the audience were fortunate to see Brace and Cooper perform locally, as the duo will soon be taking their show overseas to Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Event sponsors included Maury Regional Medical Center, Tristar Bank, Dr. Bob Thompson and Dr. David Foster.
